The Blue Sox have added two more pieces to the puzzle today, signing University of Buffalo standouts Tyler Mautner and Mike McGee.
The University of Buffalo has provided the Blue Sox with talent before—last season’s NECBL Pitcher of the Year, Michael Burke, came from the Bulls and posted a 0.50 ERA, allowing just four earned runs in 70 innings of work.
Mautner, a senior first baseman, is lighting the world on fire this season with the Bulls, batting at a .476 clip on ten hits in 21 at-bats, and posting a .905 slugging percentage thanks to two doubles, two triples, and a home run. On top of his power, his plate discipline is astounding, as he has as many walks as he does hits, with an on-base percentage of an astronomical .625.
“Tyler has really special power,” said Blue Sox General Manager Hunter Golden. “What’s most impressive is that he just keeps improving. He made some major improvements to his hand positioning, load and elbows a few years back and since then has been refining those improvements to the point where he’s able to generate an incredible amount of power to all fields, really. We’ve had our eye on him for a while now and feel very fortunate to have a player of his caliber and believe he’ll make a significant impact in our lineup this summer. “
McGee, a left-handed pitcher, is also a senior, and has a 1-1 record in two starts, fanning 14 batters in 11 innings of work while allowing just four hits. Last season, he went 5-4 for the Bulls in 15 starts.
“Mike will be one of our more interesting guys to watch this summer – he’s got great pure stuff,” commented Golden. “When he comes here we’re going to help him continue to refine his control and harness what we think are really excellent raw tools. He should be a significant addition to our pitching staff.”
